Tax savings for owner-operators

Write off your health insurance, with or without a subsidy

If you're an owner-operator, a 1099 driver or you run your own authority, your health plan can lower your taxes. And if you get Marketplace tax credits, your income estimate decides whether you owe money back in April.

Write off your premiums

Self-employed truckers can usually deduct what they pay for health, dental and vision coverage for themselves, a spouse and kids. It's the self-employed health insurance deduction, and you take it on your 1040 even if you don't itemize.

Limited to your net profit, and only for months you couldn't join an employer plan (including a spouse's). Only the part you pay yourself counts, not the part your tax credit covers.

Open an HSA

Starting in 2026, bronze and catastrophic Marketplace plans count as HSA-eligible. For 2027 you can put up to $4,500 (just you) or $9,000 (family) into a Health Savings Account.

Money going in is deductible, it grows tax-free, and it comes out tax-free for doctor visits, prescriptions, dental and glasses. It's yours to keep, even if you change plans.

Lower income, lower premium

Marketplace tax credits are based on your net income after truck expenses, not what you gross on settlements. Deductions like your premiums, HSA and retirement contributions lower that number further.

That can raise your tax credit, or keep you under the income cutoff in a good year. We run the numbers with you before you enroll.

Earn too much for a subsidy? You still have good options

A lot of owner-operators net more than the cutoff (about $63,840 for a single driver on 2027 coverage, higher for families) and get no tax credit at all. That's when the write-offs do the heavy lifting.

We shop plans at full price the same way: the right network for your routes, at the lowest premium, set up to cut your tax bill.

  • Private and off-Marketplace PPO plans. Without a subsidy you're not tied to Marketplace plans, and some PPOs have networks in every state you run.
  • Bigger write-offs. At a higher income you're in a higher tax bracket, so every dollar of premium you deduct saves you more.
  • Bronze plan + HSA. Put up to $4,500 (just you) or $9,000 (family) away pre-tax in 2027 and cut your taxable income.
  • Right on the line? HSA deposits and retirement contributions (like a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k)) lower the income that counts and can bring the credit back.

How a good year can turn into a tax bill

Your monthly tax credit is based on the income you estimate when you sign up. At tax time the IRS checks it against what you actually made (Form 8962). If you made more, you pay the difference back.

Starting with 2026 taxes, the old caps on paying it back are gone. If your income goes over the cutoff, you repay every dollar of credit you got.

  • Estimate your net income realistically, not your best-case or worst-case month
  • Update HealthCare.gov within 30 days when your income changes
  • Use your HSA and retirement contributions to stay under the cutoff when you're close

How truck driver health insurance quotes work

  1. Enter your home ZIP

Health plans are priced by where you live, not where you park the truck. Your home ZIP decides which plans and prices you can get.

  2. Answer a few quick questions

Who needs coverage and their ages, whether anyone uses tobacco, and your estimated household income. For owner-operators that is net profit after truck expenses, not gross revenue.

  3. A licensed advisor checks your quote

We compare plans side by side, check that your doctors and prescriptions are covered, and look for networks that work across state lines. We reach out within 1 business day, often within hours.

What sets the price of your quote

  • Home ZIP and age. Under ACA rules these two drive most of the price. Your health history does not.
  • Income. Marketplace tax credits are based on household income. Above 400% of the poverty level (about $63,840 for a single driver on 2027 coverage) most people lose the credit, so a good mileage year can change your price. Try the owner-operator subsidy cliff calculator.
  • Network. A nationwide PPO usually costs more than a local HMO, but it lets you see doctors in other states.
  • Plan level and tobacco. Bronze, silver and gold trade a lower premium for a higher deductible, and tobacco use can add a surcharge.

Truck driver quote FAQ

How long does a truck driver health insurance quote take?

The online form takes about a minute. A licensed advisor follows up within 1 business day, often within hours, by call or text, whichever works from the road.

Does a quote cost anything or commit me to a plan?

No. Quotes are free and there is no obligation. Insurance companies pay us, and you pay the same premium you would pay buying the plan yourself.

Can I get a quote outside open enrollment?

Yes. For 2027 coverage, open enrollment runs November 1 to January 15 in most states, and you need to enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. Outside that window you need a qualifying life event, such as losing coverage when you leave a carrier. See the 2027 open enrollment guide for drivers.

Will my plan work when I'm on the road in another state?

Emergency care is covered at in-network cost sharing anywhere in the U.S. under ACA rules. Routine care depends on the network, so we look for plans with national PPO networks when you run out of state. More in using your plan out of state.

Does health insurance cover my DOT physical?

Usually not, because a DOT physical is a work requirement rather than preventive care. There are ways to pay less. See does insurance cover a DOT physical.

Can I get health insurance as a truck driver with sleep apnea, diabetes or high blood pressure?

Yes. ACA Marketplace plans cannot turn you down or charge you more for a pre-existing condition, including the ones a DOT physical screens for. That lets you get treated and keep your medical card.

How much does health insurance cost for an owner-operator?

It depends on age, home ZIP and household income. Without a subsidy, a single self-employed driver typically pays about $350 to $500 a month for a Bronze plan. Owner-operators get tax credits on net income after truck expenses, so many pay much less. A quote shows your real price.

Is health insurance tax deductible for owner-operators?

Generally yes. Self-employed drivers who are not eligible for an employer plan can usually deduct their health insurance premiums through the self-employed health insurance deduction. Ask your tax preparer how it applies to you.

What happens to my health insurance if I switch trucking companies?

Losing your carrier's plan opens a 60-day special enrollment period. You can enroll in a Marketplace plan that usually starts the 1st of the month after you sign up, which covers the waiting period at your new carrier.
