HSA for Truck Drivers: How a Health Savings Account Cuts Your Taxes and Your Premium (2027)

An HSA used to need a special plan. Since 2026, any bronze plan bought through HealthCare.gov or a state exchange qualifies, which makes it one of the easiest tax breaks a driver can take.

What an HSA is, in plain English

A health savings account is a bank or investment account that belongs to you, not your carrier or your plan. You put money in, it comes off your taxable income, it grows tax-free, and you take it out tax-free for medical bills. Unused money rolls over every year and stays yours if you change jobs, switch carriers or go from company driver to owner-operator.

The catch: you can only contribute while you are covered by an HSA-eligible plan and have no other health coverage that is not HSA-eligible.

What changed: every bronze plan now qualifies

Starting with 2026 plans, federal law treats every bronze and catastrophic plan sold on the Marketplace as HSA-eligible, even if it does not meet the old high-deductible rules. That opened HSAs to a lot of owner-operators and 1099 drivers who buy their own coverage. The same law made it permanent that HSA plans can cover telehealth visits before you meet your deductible.

2027 HSA numbersSelf-onlyFamily
Maximum contribution$4,500$9,000
Extra catch-up at age 55+$1,000$1,000 per eligible spouse
Minimum deductible (employer and non-bronze HSA plans)$1,750$3,500
Maximum out-of-pocket (employer and non-bronze HSA plans)$8,700$17,400

Why an HSA is worth more to a driver than to most people

1. It lowers your income tax

Contributions are deducted above the line, whether or not you itemize. A driver in the 22% federal bracket who puts in the full $4,500 saves about $990 in federal income tax. Owner-operators contribute directly and take the deduction on their return; company drivers whose carrier offers an HSA plan can contribute through payroll.

2. It can raise your Marketplace subsidy

The HSA deduction lowers the same income figure (MAGI) your premium tax credit is based on. For an owner-operator sitting just over the 400% line ($63,840 for a single person for 2027 coverage), an HSA contribution can be the difference between no credit and thousands of dollars of credit. Check where you stand with the owner-operator subsidy cliff calculator.

3. It pays for the things drivers actually buy

HSA money can generally be used, tax-free, for:

  • Deductibles, copays and coinsurance, including urgent care in another state
  • Prescriptions, including ones filled at a chain pharmacy on your route (filling prescriptions on the road)
  • CPAP machines and supplies for sleep apnea (sleep apnea and your CDL)
  • Blood pressure monitors, glucose meters and diabetic supplies
  • Dental work, eye exams, glasses and contacts
  • A DOT medical exam that nobody else reimburses you for (keep the receipt)

4. It travels with you

Drivers change carriers and status more than almost anyone. The HSA balance does not care. Money you put in as a company driver is still there when you get your own authority.

Example: a single owner-operator in Florida

StepAmount
Expected 2027 MAGI before HSAabout $66,000
400% line for one person (2027 coverage)$63,840
HSA contribution$4,500
MAGI after HSAabout $61,500, back under the line
Federal income tax saved at 22%about $990

Getting back under the line restores the premium tax credit, which for a driver in their 40s or 50s is often worth several thousand dollars a year on top of the tax saving. The exact credit depends on your age and the benchmark plan in your ZIP.

What to watch out for

  • No double coverage. If you are also covered by a spouse's regular (non-HSA) plan or by Medicare, you generally cannot contribute.
  • Self-employment tax. For owner-operators, HSA contributions reduce income tax but not self-employment tax.
  • Bronze means a higher deductible. An HSA works best when you actually fund it. If you cannot set money aside, compare the bronze deductible with a silver plan's before switching. Drivers who take regular medications should check the drug list first.
  • Network still matters. A cheap bronze HMO built around your home town will not help you three states away. Look for bronze plans with a national or travel-friendly network. Nationwide PPO options for drivers.
  • You have until the tax deadline. Contributions for 2027 can be made until the filing deadline in April 2028, so you can size them once you know your real profit.

Frequently asked

Can truck drivers open an HSA?

Yes, if you are covered by an HSA-eligible plan and have no other non-HSA health coverage. Since 2026 every bronze and catastrophic Marketplace plan qualifies, so most owner-operators and 1099 drivers who buy their own insurance can open one. Company drivers can contribute if their carrier's plan is HSA-eligible.

How much can I put in an HSA for 2027?

$4,500 for self-only coverage or $9,000 for family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up if you are 55 or older. You can make 2027 contributions up to the tax filing deadline in April 2028.

Does an HSA lower my ACA subsidy income?

Yes. HSA contributions are an above-the-line deduction, so they reduce your modified adjusted gross income, the number your premium tax credit is based on. That can increase your credit or bring you back under the 400% subsidy cliff.

Can I pay for my DOT physical with an HSA?

A DOT medical exam is generally a qualified medical expense if your employer or plan does not reimburse you for it, so it can usually be paid from an HSA. Keep the receipt with your tax records.

Is a bronze HSA plan a good idea for a driver?

It can be, especially if you fund the HSA and rarely need care. Compare the bronze deductible and drug coverage with a silver plan, and make sure the network works outside your home state before you switch.
