How does small business health insurance work?

A business with at least one W-2 employee besides the owner can offer a group plan. Carriers typically require around 70% of eligible employees to participate and the employer to contribute roughly half of the employee-only premium. Group coverage is guaranteed-issue regardless of anyone's health, premiums are a deductible business expense, and small employers may qualify for a tax credit. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees are not required to offer coverage.

Small Business Health Insurance Rules and Participation

Florida has specific rules that affect how small group health insurance works. Here is what every Florida employer needs to know before shopping for a plan.

Minimum Participation

Most Florida carriers require 50% to 75% of eligible employees to enroll. Employees with coverage through a spouse can typically waive out without affecting your participation rate.

Guaranteed Issue

Under the ACA, small group plans in Florida (1 to 50 employees) are guaranteed issue. Carriers cannot deny coverage or charge more based on employee health status. Pre-existing conditions cannot be excluded.

Florida Blue and Local Carriers

Florida Blue (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida) has one of the broadest provider networks in the state. We compare Florida Blue alongside UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Cigna to find the best fit for your team and location.

Small Business Tax Credit

Businesses with fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees and average wages under $56,000 may qualify for a federal Small Business Health Care Tax Credit worth up to 50% of your premium contribution. We check this for every client.

Common Questions

Small Business Health Insurance Florida FAQ

How many employees do I need for group health insurance in Florida?+

In Florida, you need as few as 2 employees to qualify for a small group health plan. Most carriers require at least one W-2 employee in addition to the owner. VS Health Benefits specializes in micro-group plans for businesses with 2 to 9 employees -- a segment most brokers overlook.

How much does small business health insurance cost in Florida?+

Florida employers typically contribute $300 to $600 per employee per month for a solid group plan. The employee share depends on the employer contribution -- most Florida employers cover 50% to 75% of the employee-only premium. Dependent coverage is typically paid by the employee. We run exact quotes for your team at no cost.

When can I enroll in a small business health plan in Florida?+

Unlike individual ACA plans, small group health insurance in Florida has no fixed open enrollment window. You can set up a new group plan at any time of year. Most plans take effect on the first of the month following enrollment -- this is one of the biggest advantages of group coverage over individual plans.

Is small business health insurance tax deductible?+

Yes. Employer premium contributions are generally 100% tax deductible as a business expense. Employees benefit too because their share of premiums is often paid pre-tax through a Section 125 cafeteria plan. Businesses with fewer than 25 FTE employees may also qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit worth up to 50% of the employer premium contribution.

What is the best health insurance for a small business in Florida?+

The best plan depends on your team size, industry, employee ages, and how much you want to contribute. Florida Blue has the broadest local network for Florida-based employees. UnitedHealthcare and Aetna are strong options if employees travel or work across multiple states. For groups of 2 to 9, micro-group plans through select carriers offer competitive group rates. We compare all options side by side for free.

Do I have to offer health insurance to employees in Florida?+

Florida employers with fewer than 50 full-time equivalent employees are not legally required to offer health insurance. However, offering group coverage is one of the most effective tools to attract and retain employees -- especially in trades, hospitality, and healthcare where competition for workers is fierce. Many owners find that turnover costs exceed the cost of the plan.

Can I get group health insurance in Tampa or Miami for a small business?+

Yes. VS Health Benefits works with small businesses throughout Florida including Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Jacksonville, and St. Petersburg. Plan availability and carrier networks vary by county, which is why working with a local advisor matters. We know which carriers have the strongest networks in each Florida market.
