The letters on your ID card decide what happens when you need care away from home. Here is the short version for drivers.
Pays only for doctors in its network, usually one state or metro area, and often needs a referral. Outside the network, only emergencies are covered.
No referrals, but the same rule: in network or you pay. Many Marketplace plans are EPOs with a network that stops at the state line.
Mostly in network, with some out-of-network coverage at a higher cost. Read the out-of-network deductible before you count on it.
Pays in and out of network. A PPO with a national network, or a Blue plan with BlueCard access, is the closest thing to coverage that rides with you.
Emergencies. Under the ACA, every Marketplace plan must cover emergency care at any hospital in the country, without prior approval, at your in-network cost. The federal No Surprises Act also protects you from most surprise balance bills for emergency care.
The gap is everything else: an urgent care visit for a bad cough in Amarillo, stitches that need a follow-up, a refill when your pharmacy is 1,200 miles away. That is where the plan type matters. Read more in using your plan out of state and filling prescriptions on the road.

It depends on the plan type. Every ACA plan covers emergency care anywhere in the country at in-network cost sharing. For urgent care, doctor visits and follow-ups, HMO and EPO plans usually only pay inside their network, which is often one state or one region. PPO plans pay outside the network at a higher cost, and some have national networks.
For drivers who are out two weeks or more at a time, a plan with a national network is the safest choice: a PPO with national reach, or a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan that includes BlueCard access for non-emergency care. Add a plan with telehealth and a national pharmacy network. If no PPO is sold in your home state, an advisor can check private plans and group options.
Yes. Under the ACA, plans must cover emergency services without prior approval and at in-network cost sharing, even at an out-of-network hospital. The federal No Surprises Act also protects you from most surprise balance bills for emergency care. The gap is non-emergency care: urgent care, doctor visits and follow-ups.
You buy coverage in the state of your legal residence, usually the address on your CDL and tax return. That state's plans, networks and rules apply to you wherever you drive.
